Qualifications and experience

Essential

Minimum of an ONC/HNC or equivalent qualification in electrical engineering or an allied discipline.

Working knowledge of relevant office and project management software.

Appreciation of the power sector – safe working practice, organisation structure and regulation – and current issues

Desirable

Valid UK driving licence.

Experience of working in a power sector organisation, in a craft or technical role.

IOSH and/or NEBOSH qualification or equivalent would be an advantage.

Post graduate qualification in a technical or business discipline, and evidence of commitment to CPD.

Expert knowledge of relevant project management software.

Professional knowledge of technical and financial concepts, with evidence that they are translated to drafting reports, studies and correspondence with customers/advisers/regulators/accrediting bodies etc.

Main duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to:

• Project engineer and manage the design aspects of project based works – electricity distribution system projects at voltages from low voltage up to and including 132kV.
• Provision of project designs and documentation detailing the associated engineering requirement.
• Undertaking engineering design, feasibility and technical development work including liaising with others for gathering system studies or system modelling information to support the work designs.
• Developing technically acceptable and compliant engineering feasibility solutions for works in line with Company functional requirements, Company and industry standards.
• Specifying and ordering of equipment, plant and services provision utilising the Company contract agreements with Suppliers and managing Contractor interface.
• Review designs and plant specifications, specification of equipment on the Company’s electrical distribution system, tendering and evaluation of supplier’s equipment offers.
• Review specifications produced by Independent Connection Providers.
• Undertake witness testing of plant and equipment and attend Factory Acceptance Testing.
• Identify and interface with Customers and stakeholder as well as internal and external resources to the Company to develop and engineer projects.
• Administer contracts and manage contract mobilisation on projects.
• Develop and maintain agreed programmes of work which covers all relevant dimensions.
• Project manage the safe delivery of project based works as prioritised by the Company and in line with Company objectives, typically to time, cost and quality.
• Carry out the effective cost monitoring, control and management associated with delivering within the budget and allowable tolerance to match financial governance rules.
• Hold and lead project meetings (initiation, design, mobilisation, progress and close-out) routinely in line with Company process/procedures.
• Establish communication plans and maintain effective project team communication on progress, change and updates. Proactively manage complaints and target resolution.
• Quality management to deliver works in line with industry and quality standards.
• Safety management of project-based works including undertaking duties under the CDM Regulations as Principal Designer.
• Customer service and customer / stakeholder management to meet regulatory and licence conditions.
• Environmental management including maintaining adequate project level controls.
• Provide accurate and timely reports on progress and status of projects in development and delivery, providing regular updates.
• Risk management associated with delivering works.
• Providing support to monitor and update Company resource requirements.
• Support the programming of project resource by gathering regular programme updates across a portfolio of works and producing regular resource utilisation forecast information.

Have, or be prepared to acquire under supervision, a sound, practical knowledge of

• Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) requirements in the electricity industry
• Electricity network regulations / NERS requirements
• Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or Grid code for protection requirements
• ESQCR Regulations 2002.

Requirement for a Connections Designer to deliver projects for DNOs. To be based at either the DNOs premises or at our Colchester office.

You will be proficient in:

• Design and costing of LV & 11kV (up to and including 132 kV) projects for new Connections, asset replacement, non-rechargeable and diversions
• Analysing network issues and performance problems, and propose technically sound and cost-effective solutions
• Analysing generation connections and issue jobs for Witness Testing
• Producing concise business cases in the correct format and present them for authorisation in a timely manner to deliver the Production Plan
• Determining the appropriate point of connection (POC) for new load and generation enquiries from LV up to and including 132 kV
• Undertaking site visits and meetings as necessary

Ideally you will also be aware of:

• Electricity network regulations / NERS requirements
• DNO or Grid code for protection settings
• Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) requirements in the electricity industry

Required education and training:

Requirement for an Electrical Design Engineer to deliver high value protection and control schemes for electricity distribution projects, based in Colchester with good rates of pay.

You will be proficient in:

• Design of control and protection schemes for HV and EHV substations production of main connections and protection drawings
• Calculation of protection settings
• Cable calculations up to 132 kV
• Substation design experience at 11 kV, 33 kV or 66 kV or 132 kV
• Design experience of up to 400 kV would be ideal but not a prerequisite
• Understanding the electrical aspects of power supplies, substations or
• Cabling/overhead line projects from LV up to and including 132 kV
• Power systems studies, such as load flow and short circuit studies

Ideally you will also be aware of:

• Electricity Network Regulations / National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) requirements
• DNO and IDNO design standards and approval processes
• ENA Engineering Recommendations
• Grid code for protection settings
• Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) requirements in the electricity industry
• Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
• General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Information Security requirements
